Horrible Imaginings #175: Dark Stories from the Bahr Crawl

Returning to the "literature" in our mission to explore horror in history, art, literature, film, and beyond! Today, we are giving you one of our most special Storytime Editions yet! It is a whole collection of readings from some of today's most prominent authors of the bizarre, the horrific, the weird, or the just plain dark!

That's right! Horrible Imaginings Film Festival helped organize the San Diego leg of what is being called "The Bahr Crawl." It has been a road trip of readings to celebrate the release of Angel Meat, a new collection of short stories from award-winning author Laura Lee Bahr. Joining her in these readings are Splatterpunk legend John Skipp, Andrew J. Stone, and San Diego's own David Agranoff and Anthony Trevino, who brought selections of their own to share at Verbatim Books.

As Laura Lee Bahr puts it during the performance, ". . .I feel that reading is a very intimate act." I agree with her, and it is for this reason that the almost lost art of reading aloud in public is especially potent for horror. In a way, the act of scaring one another with spoken stories is one of the oldest forms of creative communication and the birthplace of what we now know as horror.

I hope you enjoy this brief collection of bizarre and dark stories, as told by their authors. Thank you, Verbatim Books for hosting us! Now get to listening and sharing!

Horrible Imaginings Podcast #164: BizarroCon, Horrible People, and the You-Shaped Hole in the Universe

As promised! The Horrible Imaginings Podcast has picked up an esteemed and brilliant new semi-regular co-host! He has been known for his collaborative work in novels and anthologies including The Light at the End, The Scream, Animals, and Book of the Dead. He publishes the work of other talented authors with his imprint Fungasm PressAlong with his co-director Andrew Kasch, he has also directed two short films that played Horrible Imaginings Film Festival: Stay at Home Dad and ClownTown: Bombo and Flopsy in an Honest Mis-Stake, as well as a segment for the Halloween anthology film Tales of Halloween. Many of you know by now that I am talking about John Skipp.

Skipp was a special guests at the latest Horrible Imaginings Film Festival in September--as a panelist on our "Horror in Literature" panel, and as a reader during our campfire-style readings of horror stories on the Botanical Lawn in Balboa Park, alongside such great talents as Laura Lee Bahr, Brian Evenson, Cody Goodfellow, and Ross E. Lockhart. It was during his time at the festival, and during some of the conversations we had, that I thought he would be a great semi-regular co-host for the podcast, since he is quite adept at our regular mission of exploring horror in history, art, literature, film, and beyond!

Skipp also came to me because he wanted to show some of the films he saw at Horrible Imaginings at a showcase he was programming for Portland, Oregon's Bizarro Con. I decided this should be a perfect first podcast episode for him--what is Bizarro, what is the convention like, and so on! I also decide to discuss his notions about the art of horrible people, which is also the title of his 2015 short story anthology!

Horrible Imaginings Podcast #163: Dracula Vs. Hitler! A Conversation with Author Patrick Sheane Duncan!

Hello everyone! I hope you didn't eat too many people for Thanksgiving!

In today's episode, I get to recommend some holiday reading for you. It's a battle between a real-life horror one side, facing off against one of literature's most popular monsters! That's right, the new book "Dracula Vs. Hitler" has hit the shelves! I read it in just over a day, with its fast pace and sense of fun, and willingness to bring some bloodshed. How could I not invite the author to the show?

Patrick S. Duncan has been a screenwriter for a long time. He's written "Mr. Holland's Opus," "Courage Under Fire," "Nick of Time," among many other titles. His resume made me extra curious to read this particular novel, which has such a gloriously absurd title. I have to admit, that it was more than I was expecting. I hope you enjoy our conversation about the story, the characters, Mr. Duncan's writing process, and even how his personal experiences from Vietnam helped inform his work on this novel! We keep it relatively spoiler free in this discussion (unless you are a major crybaby), but I highly recommend you pick this book up in either case! San Diego people can grab it at Mysterious Galaxy Books! If you've read it, drop me a line and let me know what you think!

Performance Art: The Horror Cabal of Anna Yanushkevich!

Anna Y 2

Yanushkevich uses her background in ballet, circus, and other techniques to weave aerial, hoop, ballet, and interpretive dance with hypnotic, almost nightmarish, imagery. Her themes include insanity, witchcraft, Satanism, death, and bodily incapacitation in performances that fluidly meld the hideous with the beautiful, the terrifying with the magnetic. They are uncompromising in their rebelliousness, and we love them!

Joining Yanushkevich in her performance are two extremely talented performers:

Lilly Holiday
Lilly Holiday

Lilly Holiday has been a stripper or strip tease artist for over 12 years, starting her group Pink Boombox Productions in 2009. Lilly is now a weekly staple of the San Diego Burlesque scene. You can finder her every Wednesday night at Gossip Grill.

Hanna Denham
Hanna Denham Hanna Denham is a hand-balancing contortionist. Being relatively fresh to the industry with only four years of training, she has worked hard to achieve an unfathomable dream. With a love for performing, she always strives to give the audience something they won't expect. Not only did she fall in love with the art of contortion, but also with a desire to know the human body inside and out. Studying under body workers and working under coaches, she finds endless possibilities in the potential of the human form. "The ability comes from knowing how your muscles work," she says. "The only thing that holds us back is the lack of information." With that, she bends her life away--strong, as well as flexible!

We are proud to announce that Yanushkevich’s brand new outdoor aerial rig will get its maiden performance at this year’s festival! See history in the making! On the Botanical Lawn in Balboa Park at 9:15 PM, Saturday, September 10!
